How much does AC repair cost in Houston?
There is no single number, but there are five things that decide it, and you can tell which kind of repair you are looking at before anybody comes out.
Nobody can price an AC repair over the phone and anyone who does is guessing. But the price is not random. It comes down to five things, and knowing them tells you what kind of call this is.
First, which part failed. A capacitor, a contactor, a drain clog or a thermostat is a quick, small-parts repair. A fan motor, a blower motor or a control board is a mid-sized one. A compressor, an evaporator coil or a refrigerant leak on an older system is the expensive end, and the point at which replacement comes into the conversation. Second, the refrigerant. Older systems use a gas that is being phased out and costs several times what the current one does, so a recharge on a 2010 system is not the same job as on a 2022 one.
Third, when you call. After-hours and weekend calls in July carry a premium at almost every contractor. Fourth, access: an air handler in a cramped attic takes longer than one in a garage. Fifth, the diagnosis itself, which is usually a flat call-out fee and is sometimes credited against the repair.
The honest answer, then, is to get the system looked at and a written diagnosis that names the part and says why it failed. If the price is one number with no part named, ask. And if the repair is on a system over twelve years old, ask for the replacement figure beside it so you are deciding with both in front of you.
