Thermostat Repair and Replacement
When the system is fine and the thing on the wall is the problem.
A fair share of "the AC is broken" calls end at the thermostat. It has lost its programme, its batteries have died, the wire behind it has come loose, it has been put on the wrong setting after a power cut, or a smart thermostat has been wired without the common wire it needs and reboots every few hours. None of those is a system fault, and a technician who checks the thermostat first saves you the cost of looking anywhere else.
The genuine thermostat problems are a unit that reads the wrong temperature because it sits in sun or over a lamp, one that short-cycles the system because its differential is set too tight, and the older mercury units that drift out of calibration. A thermostat is also the easiest place for a heat pump to be mis-set so that it runs on backup heat all winter.
Replacing one is usually quick, and a smart thermostat on a Houston system pays back through scheduling alone. But it has to be compatible with the system, particularly heat pumps and two-stage units, which is where a lot of owner installs go wrong.
What it looks like
- A blank or flickering display
- The house temperature nowhere near what the screen says
- The system switching on and off every few minutes
- A smart thermostat that keeps rebooting
Whatever the problem turns out to be, the first step is the same: describe it, say where the house is, and one independent HVAC contractor working in your town contacts you to look at it. No charge for being connected, and no obligation once he has.
