Ductless Mini Split Repair and Installation
For the room the central system never reaches, the garage, the workshop or the addition.
A ductless mini split is a small outdoor unit feeding one or more indoor heads through a refrigerant line, with no ducts at all. Around Houston they go into converted garages, workshops, sunrooms, additions built after the main system was sized, and the upstairs bedroom that is always five degrees warmer than the thermostat. They are efficient, quiet, and because they are inverter-driven they modulate rather than switching on and off.
They fail in their own ways. The indoor head's drain line clogs and drips down the wall. The filter in the head clogs and the unit ices. The outdoor unit's control board, which is more complex than a conventional condenser's, fails from a power surge. And refrigerant leaks at the flare fittings are the classic installation fault, which is why the installer matters as much as the brand.
For a new install the questions are whether one head or several, where the line set can run, where the condensate can drain, and whether the electrical panel has capacity. A contractor who installs them regularly will have those answers on the first visit.
What it looks like
- Water dripping from the indoor head or down the wall
- The head blowing but not cooling
- An error code flashing on the unit
- One room in the house that the main system cannot handle
Whatever the problem turns out to be, the first step is the same: describe it, say where the house is, and one independent HVAC contractor working in your town contacts you to look at it. No charge for being connected, and no obligation once he has.
