Emergency AC Repair
No cooling in July with somebody elderly, ill or very young in the house is not a tomorrow job.
In most of the country a broken AC is an inconvenience. In Houston between June and September it is a health risk for anyone old, very young, pregnant or unwell, and an indoor temperature that climbs into the nineties overnight is not something to wait out. If that is the house you are in, say so when you describe the problem, because it changes the order a contractor works his calls in.
While you wait: switch the system off at the thermostat rather than letting it short-cycle, which can take a struggling compressor from repairable to dead. Close blinds on the sun side. If the outdoor unit is choked with debris, gently hose the fins from the outside with the power off. Check the breaker. Change the filter. Those four things fix a surprising share of "emergencies" before anyone arrives.
What you should not do is accept a replacement quote at eight in the evening from somebody you have never met. A genuine emergency is a repair call; a system that is genuinely beyond repair can be bridged with a window unit for a few days while you get a second price in daylight.
What it looks like
- No cooling at all and the house climbing past 85
- Burning or electrical smell from the air handler
- The outdoor unit making a loud grinding or screaming noise
- Water pouring from the air handler or through a ceiling
Whatever the problem turns out to be, the first step is the same: describe it, say where the house is, and one independent HVAC contractor working in your town contacts you to look at it. No charge for being connected, and no obligation once he has.
